BODMIN MOOR, CORNWALL – July 6, 2025
Caradon Stone is proud to announce its feature in the June 2025 issue of the Garden Design Journal.
The article, titled “Old Stones, New Means,” highlights our innovative and environmentally sensitive approach to quarrying on Bodmin Moor. The feature, written by award winning garden designer and presenter Juliet Sargeant, showcases Caradon Stone’s commitment to sustainability, local industry, and the preservation of Cornwall’s ancient landscape.
The Garden Design Journal feature beautifully captures our commitment to sustainability, supporting local industry, and preserving Cornwall’s breathtaking ancient landscape. As the article eloquently describes,
“I look at boulders that were discarded 100 years ago, for instance, when the delicate economic balance of quarrying tipped in favour of foreign stone and many Cornish businesses closed. Now, Will and his fellow director Richard Crocker are seeking to turn fortune back towards local prosperity by re-working these discarded pieces into premium architectural and landscaping products: cornices, lintels, feature stones, seats, driveway setts, water bowls… you name it, after all, we are the garden and landscape designers.”
Focus on Sustainable Quarrying
Our Managing Director, Will Hugh, shared his pride in finding a new use for these discarded materials. The journal highlights a key environmental benefit, noting that “The embodied carbon of extracting these rocks in the 1800s has long since dissipated and Will is determined to keep it that way”. Another significant point of pride for us, as highlighted in the feature, is Caradon Stone’s ambitious commitment to achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2030. Our dedication to sustainability is further showcased through the successful rewilding of our oldest quarry, Westwood, which now boasts “deep, transparent pools” where freshwater crayfish thrive peacefully.
The article also delves into our ongoing efforts at Lantoom, another one of our quarries. Here, we are continually improving efficiencies and reducing our environmental impact through strategic investments in renewable energy tariffs and the innovative use of recycled rainwater for cutting stone with a newly acquired electric wire saw. We are also actively researching groundbreaking uses for our waste stone chippings, including their exciting potential as a carbon sink through enhanced rock weathering.
The piece was expertly written by Juliet Sargeant FSGLD, an award-winning garden designer, RHS Chelsea Gold medal winner, and recipient of two SGD awards for sustainability and hard landscaping. Ms. Sargeant, known for her “longstanding interest in people’s interaction with the landscape” , beautifully articulates her appreciation for Caradon Stone’s ethos: “I have come to realise that when I buy stone from a business such as Caradon, I am investing in not just the product for my client, but also in the commitment of the company to support local industry, protect the ancient landscape, and sustain the wider environment”. She powerfully concludes, “My money (or my client’s money) buys not just the stone today but the reparations tomorrow”.
We warmly invite all potential customers, including garden and landscape designers, to visit us on Bodmin Moor to personally select the perfect pieces for your projects. We believe it is “a fittingly personal way to start the next chapter in the life of the stones”.
